KYBELLA® is used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA® dissolves fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. Once dissolved, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is KYBELLA®?
Kybella is an injectable formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat. When injected into areas of unwanted fat, KYBELLA® permanently destroys fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. Fat cleared from the treatment area is processed through natural metabolic mechanisms. Additionally, KYBELLA® results in skin tightening.
What areas can you use KYBELLA®?
KYBELLA® is approved by the FDA to improve the look and profile of submental fullness caused by submental fat, which is the area underneath the chin. The fullness (fat) in this area is historically referred to as a double chin. Treatment of the double chin using KYBELLA® has seen excellent results without the surgical intervention of liposuction. Off label treatment areas that are being explored for KYBELLA® include; bra roll, small fat pockets on the stomach, and even post axillary fat (that annoying bulge of fat that occurs near the armpit).
What is the recovery from KYBELLA® like?
The recovery from kybella is relatively painless. KYBELLA® causes swelling and may result in tenderness, bruising and numbness to the treatment area directly after injection. The length of recovery varies per patient but typically lasts about 4-7 days.
How long does KYBELLA® last?
After you have your series of KYBELLA® treatments (3-6 sessions spaced about 6-8 weeks apart) and have achieved your desired result, you will not need further injections. While KYBELLA® does not remove every fat cell, it does reduce and remove the cells that you are targeting and these cells will not return.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments necessary to achieve desired results vary based on severity of fullness but typically range from 3-6 treatments. Treatments are spaced 6-8 weeks apart.
